School of Science

Marist College seeks an innovative, collegial and entrepreneurial Dean for its School of Science.

The Dean is the School's chief academic and administrative officer of a unit comprising five departments, 21 full-time faculty, three full-time staff, about two dozen part-time faculty and approximately 400 students, many of whom pursue careers in medical/health professions.

Bachelor's degrees are offered in Athletic Training, Biology, Biochemistry, Biology Education, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Policy, Environmental Science and Medical Technology. Courses are also offered in Anthropology, Health, Physical Education, and Physics.

As a member of both the Dean's Council and President's Cabinet, the Dean fills an important leadership position at an institution with a national reputation for teaching excellence and technology innovation.

Reporting to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs/Dean of Faculty (VPAA), the Dean exercises supervisory responsibility for the School’s personnel, planning, fiscal management, project development, facilities, operations, assessment and other administrative functions.

The primary responsibilities of the Dean are to hire, mentor, develop, supervise and evaluate all full-time faculty in the School; develop and implement programs that bring students and distinction to Marist; and, ensure the quality and relevance of all Science programs, including the Natural Science component of Marist’s Core/Liberal Studies program.

The Dean also exercises oversight of Marist's ACS approval for Chemistry and Biochemistry and national accreditation of its Athletic Training and Medical Technology programs.

Marist is a comprehensive liberal arts institution and the Dean is the key advocate for the role of Science in a Liberal Arts Education. Marist is also an institutional member of the Council on Undergraduate Research and the Dean takes a leadership role in advancing undergraduate research across the College.

Marist Science students have earned prestigious Fulbright, Goldwater and other nationally competitive awards and the Dean plays a vital role in promoting these opportunities on campus and guiding student success. Furthermore, the Dean engages with alumni, scholars, advisory boards and other professionals to promote grants, research, postgraduate placements and internship opportunities.

The ideal candidate will have a distinguished academic career, including a record of progressively increasing academic administrative responsibility; prior success in engaging internal and external constituencies, expanding financial resources and developing successful programs; experience teaching undergraduate students and directing undergraduate research initiatives; a commitment to the Marist mission; and, knowledge of and dedication to the assessment of student learning. He or she will also work with faculty and the VPAA to develop a vision for the School and will have the leadership skills to achieve that vision.

A terminal degree in one of Marist’s Science disciplines or a closely related field, is required.

Marist College is an independent institution located in New York's historic Hudson River Valley. Situated on a 150-acre campus overlooking the Hudson River, it enrolls 4,400 full-time and 850 part-time undergraduates and approximately 1,000 graduate students.

In recent years, the College has pursued a major building expansion which is currently focused on construction of a 54,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Hancock Technology Center.
