Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre

The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC), invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in the teaching stream to establish, deliver and assess programs of instructional/educational support for students and Faculty in the Sciences and Mathematics, beginning July 1st, 2010.

Initial appointment is for a term of one to three years and is renewable up to five years.

Appointment at the rank of Lecturer may be renewed annually, to a maximum of five years. In the fifth year of service, the Lecturer will be reviewed and a recommendation made, with respect to promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the Director of the RGASC and other appropriate academic partners, to teach Science-based Reading, Thinking, Math and Writing Strategies in one-on-one, small group and classroom settings to Undergraduates; collaborate with Faculty to integrate these skills into their courses; teach TAs and Undergraduate Peer Learning Assistants to help students formulate strategies for studying and to assess scientific writing and communicate the principles of effective writing to their peers; and, conduct innovative research and contribute to the literature on best practices in teaching and learning in the Sciences and Math.

Qualifications:
Each candidate should have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent in Science and/or Math-based disciplines. Qualified candidates will have at least three years of experience teaching Science-based Reading, Thinking, Math and Writing Skills at the university level. Candidates should have experience in instructional design; assessing Science and Math Focused Reading, Thinking, Writing and Presentation Skills; and, training TAs and Peer Assistants.

The candidate will support Faculty and students as they strive for excellence in teaching and learning, using instructional expertise and knowledge of best practices.

The candidate will have proven excellent presentation skills in high performance academic environments.

Preference will be given to candidates with peer-reviewed publication(s) in the area of Teaching and Learning in the Sciences and Math.
