Job: Full Professor -- Mathematics/Applied Mathematics
Mälardalen University
School of Education, Culture and Communication

Since 2001, Mälardalen University has the right to educate and examine Doctoral Students within the Engineering Sciences, under which falls the third-cycle subject area of Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.

At the University, there are about 50 Full Professors and more than 230 Doctoral Students, of whom 2 Professors and 7 Doctoral Students work within Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. Research at the University takes place within six so-called research profiles. Most of the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics research -- represented by the two currently employed Full Professors, six of the Doctoral Students, two Associate Professors and one other Researcher -- falls within the prioritized research profile, Process and Resource Optimization (PRO).

Applicants for the vacancy announced here should specialize in Applied Mathematics, more specifically, Optimization or Mathematical Statistics, since the primary purpose of the Professorship is to boost the academic competence within PRO.

The new Professor is expected to contribute actively to the development of the University’s research environment in Applied Mathematics and, in particular, to research-oriented collaboration with businesses in the energy and/or financial sectors.

The job description comprises research and teaching and the Professor is expected to continually apply for external research funding.

One of the main fields of research for the Professorship is to be Optimization within Energy Trade, Distribution and Production. The applicant should also have the competence to strengthen the teaching and research area of Financial Mathematics at the University.

Administrative duties, including executive tasks, may occur.

Regular attendance at, and participation in, various activities and events at the School are taken for granted.

Required Qualifications:

Employment as a Full Professor requires excellent research and teaching skills within the subject. Apart from meeting the criteria detailed in the appointments procedure, applicants for a Professorship must give proof of their teaching abilities which are necessary for the job and, unless there are specific reasons to the contrary, have acquired formal qualifications within the realm of learning and teaching in higher education. The successful applicant must be pedagogically skillful, with respect to the planning, teaching and evaluation of courses, as well as supervision and examination.

For further details, see Chapter 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and Mälardalen University’s Appointments Procedure.

Assessment Criteria:

In the appointment process, both scientific and pedagogical skills will be taken into account.

Scientific competence in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics -- primarily within Optimization and/or Mathematical Statistics -- is to be shown in the form of publications in well-reputed, peer-reviewed journals and publication series, as well as experience in running and developing research and teaching environments or, more specifically:

- documented ability to carry out theoretical and methodological development work;
- experience working with an interdisciplinary perspective;
- international outlook;
- documented ability to cooperate;
- managing and communication skills, including experience with initiating, planning and running research projects, that involve national and international collaboration and publication; and,
- experience in developing well-functioning research and/or teaching environments.

Experience in business-oriented research collaboration(s), in particular, in the realm of Energy or Finance, would be considered a plus.

The new Professor must be able to teach in Swedish and English. If the Professor’s first language is not Swedish, the ability to teach in Swedish is expected within two years after the appointment.

In the assessment of the applicant’s teaching skills, the focus will be on extensive experiences of pedagogical development work, as well as teaching and supervision on different levels.

In your application, please give a detailed account of your pedagogical qualifications in the form of teaching experience, course coordination, the development of study materials and course evaluations, as well as a description of the pedagogical outlook and principles that inform your teaching practice.
