Department of Physics

The Department of Physics offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in Applied Physics and a new Undergraduate Degree Programme in Energy. The Department is involved in wide-ranging research and development programmes, funded by national and European agencies, in the areas of Nanomaterials, Medical Physics and Energy. In addition to its own modern laboratories, it has direct access to the state-of-the-art facilities of the University of Limerick Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI). The Department is host to the Director and several members of the Charles Parson’s Initiative (CPI), Ireland's largest research organisation in energy. CPI represents a merger of six research centres and 30 Faculty within the University, focused on researching sustainable forms of Energy across the areas of Physics, Electrochemistry, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics and Commerce.

The University of Limerick seeks applications for the Chair in Energy.

Applicants must have Ph.D.s or equivalent and their research should be in an area of Energy Generation or Energy Storage. Examples of relevant areas are Solar Energy, Electrochemical Energy and Energy Modelling.

Applicants must be world leading researchers, with exceptional records of achievement. They must have extensive research experience, significant publication records in leading international journals and demonstrated ability for attracting major research funding.

It is expected that the successful candidate will already be leading a high profile research effort and will be capable of providing leadership and guidance to other research groups at the University, working in Energy related areas. He/she will be expected to lead a major initiative in Energy at the University, with a high national and international impact.

The Chair in Energy is also intended to provide leadership in the development of degree programmes at the University, with particular emphasis on Sustainable Energy.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate both vision and innovation, combined with a commitment to curriculum development and implementation of Energy related programmes, including the new B.Sc. in Energy course.

The closing date for applications is 15 January, 2010.

Interviews will take place on March 8 and 9, 2010.
