Aalto University School of Science invites applications for:

The position will be filled primarily at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. However, we also welcome applications by outstanding scientists for Full Professor level appointment.

Job description
This position is open at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE; see ) of Aalto University School of Science in the Otaniemi campus.

Health and wellbeing is one of the seven key research areas of Aalto University, and neuroscience and neurotechnology is a strategic focus area of the School of Science. The continued development of this field is vital for reaching Aalto’s strategic objectives in scientific excellence and societal impact. The tenure track position will be placed in the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE) with research methods ranging from cellular patch-clamp techniques to human neuroimaging using, e.g., mag-netoencephalography (MEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS). NBE is world-renowned for its long-term top-level research on human systems neuroscience and pioneering development and applications of MEG technology and signal analysis in basic and clinical research. The spinoff company MEGIN (formerly Elekta Neuromag) from Aalto University (formerly Helsinki University of Technology) is currently the world-leading manufacturer of MEG devices.

NBE operates together with four other Aalto University departments a joint master program in Life Science Technologies where NBE is in charge for the Biomedical Engineering major. The tenure holder will be an active and dedicated teacher in this curriculum. The tenure holder is expected to contribute the teaching at all levels; from bachelor to graduate courses and to supervision of doctoral students.

NBE hosts and develops a national-level open-access research infrastructure, Aalto NeuroImaging (ANI), with state-of-the-art 306-channel MEG, 3T f/MRI, nTMS, and a behavioral laboratory. The experimental research currently focuses on human sensory and motor functions, cognition, social interaction, and language processing. NBE has close contacts with the University of Helsinki, Helsinki University Hospital and the MEG manufacturer, as well as active collaboration with other departments of the Aalto University. NBE is extensively networked with the neuroscience and biomedical engineering communities nationally and internationally.

On the basis of experience and competence, the successful candidate will be placed on the appropriate level of the tenure track system (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or – in case of exceptionally advanced candidates, Full Professor). An Assistant Professor will be appointed for a fixed term, an Associate Professor and a Full Professor for an indefinite term. Professors placed on the Aalto University tenure track advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of duty.

The applicants are expected to hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the position and should show outstanding promise and/or accomplishments in both research and teaching.
The candidate should have strong motivation and skills for innovative use and development of human neuroimaging methods. We are particularly interested in candidates who are keen to operate on multiple levels, from experimental work to advanced data analysis methods and development of neuroimaging instrumentation. Ideally, the appointed professor will complement the expertise of the faculty of NBE. However, NBE welcomes also applications from internationally recognized developers of novel neuroimaging methods.

The applicants will be reviewed based on their scientific merits, teaching portfolio, their experience in academic leadership and their networking with the international science community. Furthermore, the applicants are expected to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration as well as raise funds from national and international sources. The applicants are expected to have good command of English.

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.
