Job Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the UMass Amherst seeks to hire an academic-year, tenure-track faculty 
member in Discrete Mathematics and Combinatorics, starting in Fall 2025.  For this assistant professor position we are 
seeking excellent candidates with a strong mathematical background; areas of interest include, but are not restricted to: 
combinatorics (widely interpreted, including algebraic, analytic, enumerative, extremal, polyhedral and probabilistic 
combinatorics), graph theory, coding and information theory, combinatorial optimization, and applications of discrete 
mathematics to theoretical computer science. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks 
may receive consideration.  We welcome all applications, and encourage applications from candidates with backgrounds 
that are traditionally underrepresented in the mathematical sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMass Amherst includes dynamic groups in pure mathematics, applied 
mathematics, and statistics.  We have numerous faculty with interests in discrete mathematics, with research topics including 
extremal graph theory using methods from optimization and real algebraic geometry, combinatorial optimization, algebraic 
combinatorics, matroids, hyperplane arrangements, polytopes and q,t-Catalan numbers.

We are an R1 research university with strong grant funding and a baseline teaching load of three semester courses per year, 
which can be reduced through research funding buyouts. It is common for new faculty to teach two semester courses per year 
for the first two years. Our tenure system faculty typically teach upper level undergraduate and graduate courses, with 
flexibility to create courses of our choosing. The Pioneer Valley is a wonderful place to live and UMass is also interested in 
helping to resolve two body problems. We have excellent benefits including a generous state pension system and parental 
leave program. Faculty contracts are collectively bargained via a union that is part of the Massachusetts Society of Professors.

Requirements
 
Applicants must present strong evidence of research accomplishments and promise in both research and teaching. Applicants 
are required to have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field by the time of appointment.
