THE CYPRUS INSTITUTE

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is accepting applications for its Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences PhD program. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to study at The Cyprus Institute, applying their research towards the activities of the European INNOMED Project (Innovative Options for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Mediterranean).

The Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences PhD program educates potential scholars in subjects that are of international high priority. The challenging program curriculum includes courses that establish a common basis among students from different disciplines. The curriculum tracks courses depending on the selected domain (energy, environment, or atmosphere) as well as including a number of courses that provide insights into a variety of more specialized and vital topics.

Successful candidates will receive financial support for up to three years, which is the minimum duration of PhD studies at the CyI. The financial support is offered in the form of a stipend of 14,000 euro per annum for living expenses. The support is associated with the student contributing through his/her thesis research or as a part-time Research Assistant to the goals of the European Joint Programming Initiative: Water Challenges for a Changing World – Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change.

The INNOMED Project aims to develop and apply a multidisciplinary approach to quantify the physical and economic effects of alternative management options in agriculture and forestry on the catchment’s water balance, in order to ensure efficient and sustainable water management solutions at the catchment level. The project is conducted in cooperation with research partners from Spain, Italy, Portugal, France and Moldovia. In Cyprus, the field research will focus on participatory irrigation water management research. The student is expected to contribute to the installation and maintenance of soil moisture and meteorological sensors in farmers’ fields to assess agricultural water use efficiency. The student will also cooperate with farmers on improved irrigation water scheduling. All field data will be used for ecohydrological modelling at the catchment level.

We are looking for a recent MSc graduate in agricultural or biological engineering, irrigation science, agronomy or hydrology. MSc students who will be graduating by September 2017 are also eligible to apply. The student is expected to have strong analytical skills. Experience and interest in fieldwork is required. The preferred candidate will also have good communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential; proficiency in Greek language will be considered an advantage. For more information on the research context contact Prof. Adriana Bruggeman (a.bruggeman@cyi.ac.cy).

For further information on admissions requirements and eligibility criteria please visit the Education section of The Cyprus Institute website www.cyi.ac.cy or contact the Office of Graduate Studies.
