The School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team in investigating multi-hazard risks associated with tropical cyclones in a warming climate. The researcher will focus on simulating multiple hazards from tropical cyclones, including compound flooding (from storm surge, torrential rainfall, and riverine flooding) and intense winds, as well as quantifying the direct and indirect economic impacts of these hazards due to climate variability and anthropogenic warming. This research involves advanced numerical modeling using observational data and physics-based synthetic tracks across various warming scenarios.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of Dr. Ali Sarhadi to conduct original research, write manuscripts for publication, participate in professional meetings, and collaborate with faculty and graduate students at Georgia Tech. The candidate will also be encouraged to develop and pursue their own areas of research interest. Research in the group involves a combination of observational analysis, theoretical work, and numerical modeling, which the candidate will be encouraged to integrate into their own research based on their interests. The trainee will receive mentorship to develop professional skills in research design and communication, grantsmanship, leadership, networking, and navigating the faculty job market. For more information about the position, please visit the group website at https://www.sarhadilab.org/.

Qualifications
A Ph.D. in atmospheric science, climate science, civil and environmental engineering, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with expertise in multi-hazard tropical cyclone research using numerical modeling are strongly preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, and experience with machine learning approaches is a beneficial asset.

Position Description
The initial appointment is for 12 months, with the potential for renewal for up to two years total. The start date is anticipated for January 2025, with some flexibility available.

Salary
This position offers an annual stipend of $60,000, inclusive of a comprehensive benefits package.

Application Instruction
To apply, please send a single PDF by December 20, 2024, to Dr. Ali Sarhadi at sarhadi@gatech.edu, containing the following:

  1. A cover letter detailing your interest in the position and qualifications.
  2. A curriculum vitae (CV).
  3. Contact information for 2-3 professional references.
  4. (Optional) A 1-2 page statement describing your research interests.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Sarhadi with any questions prior to submitting an application.
