The School of Arts, Media and Engineering (ame.asu.edu) in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University invites applicants for Assistant Research Professor, Experiential Complex Systems beginning in academic year 2017-2018. The successful candidate will lead the scientific dimensions of research-creation at Synthesis (synthesis.ame.asu.edu). Synthesis is recognized internationally as a unique center for the experimental study of experience fusing methods from art, philosophy and technoscience.

The School of Arts, Media and Engineering is a leading transdisciplinary program in media arts and sciences. The appointee’s efforts will merge with efforts of other faculty for the achievement of significant advancements in experiential media and more broadly the relation between culture and computing. The appointee is expected to further existing research connections between the School of Arts, Media and Engineering in areas of common interest related to the appointee’s interests and strengths.

The School of Arts, Media and Engineering offers a PhD in media arts and sciences, an undergraduate degree in Digital Culture (http://digitalculture.asu.edu) with concentrations spanning the arts, design, sciences and engineering.

Required Qualifications
PhD in Computer Science or closely related area. Plus two years of post-graduate experience in scientific simulations and real-time responsive media environments. Record of publication and grant preparation in technoscientific domain.

Desired Qualifications
Experience working with the following: Computational models of complex and non-linear dynamical systems from multiple domains, including atmospheric sciences and ecology; development of real-time responsive media in Max/MSP/Jitter; data sonification and real-time analysis and synthesis of auditory environments; high-performance and GPGPU computing; networking tools and protocols for real-time distributed media (OSC, Syphon, Spout, hardware video routing), and steerable simulations.

We seek a candidate with experience in research spanning arts, design, humanities and engineering, who can take initiative in developing relationships with partners and sponsors of research in responsive environments and experiential systems.
