About UMass Amherst
The University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Commonwealth's flagship campus, is a nationally ranked public research university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The University sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, and offers a rich cultural environment in a bucolic setting close to major urban centers. In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.
Job Description
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the UMass Amherst seeks to hire an academic-year, tenure-track faculty member in Machine Learning, starting in Fall 2025. For this assistant professor position we are seeking top candidates with an exceptional mathematical background, working in areas ranging from the mathematical and statistical foundations of artificial intelligence to uncertainty quantification and scientific machine learning. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration. We welcome all applications, and encourage applications from candidates with backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in the mathematical sciences.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UMass Amherst includes dynamic groups in pure mathematics, applied mathematics , and statistics. A successful candidate will enhance the Department's nationally recognized research environment in Machine Learning and related fields, including deep learning, generative modeling, uncertainty quantification, optimization, differential privacy, optimal transport, information theory, Bayesian methods, inference, inverse problems, numerical analysis, and scientific computing.
We are an R1 research university with strong grant funding and a baseline teaching load of three semester courses per year, which can be reduced through research funding buyouts. It is common for new faculty to teach two semester courses per year for the first two years. Our tenure system faculty typically teach upper level undergraduate and graduate courses, with flexibility to create courses of our choosing. The Pioneer Valley is a wonderful place to live, and UMass is also interested in helping to resolve two body problems. We have excellent benefits including a generous state pension system and parental leave program. Faculty contracts are collectively bargained via a union that is part of the Massachusetts Society of Professors.
Requirements
Applicants must present strong evidence of outstanding research accomplishments and promise in both research and teaching. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics or a related field by the time of appointment.
Additional Information
Along with the application, please submit the following: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, description of research, statement about teaching experience and interests, a statement on contributions to inclusive excellence (see below), and three (3) letters of recommendation (at least one letter must also address the applicant's effectiveness as a teacher).
Please submit materials online to Mathjobs: https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs
Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2024 and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position should be directed to the chair of the Search Committee, Professor Markos Katsoulakis, markos@umass.edu. For additional information about the application process, contact David Rodriguez, davdrodrigu@umass.edu.
