Founded in 1907, California College of the Arts (CCA) is noted for the interdisciplinary and breadth of its programs. It offers studies in 20 Undergraduate and seven Graduate majors in the areas of Fine Arts, Architecture, Design and Writing. The College offers Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts and Master of Business Administration degrees. With campuses in San Francisco and Oakland, CCA currently enrolls 1,800 full-time students. DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
The Humanities & Sciences Division offers the General Education curriculum for all Undergraduate Students in the College. The General Education curriculum consists of courses in Writing, Literature, Visual Studies, History, Philosophy, Math and Science. The Undergraduate Mission Statement of the College emphasizes that CCA offers Liberal Arts education through the Arts. In keeping with this Mission, the College offers a strong academic component that supports students’ work in their majors, while adding to the breadth of knowledge they encounter.
POSITION SUMMARY:
CCA is seeking candidates for a full-time, Tenure-track Assistant Professor Position in Science, to begin August 2010. The successful candidate will possess a broad knowledge of the Sciences and will also possess a high level of expertise in at least one of the following areas: Environmental Science, Material Science, Computer Science or Cognitive Science. The successful candidate will be an advocate for the Sciences in the context of an Art and Design College, by playing a key role in the planning and oversight of the Science component of the General Education Curriculum. Given the College’s Mission, we are particularly interested in interdisciplinary candidates whose research practice and teaching interests connect to the Art, Design, Writing and/or Architecture Majors at the College. Additionally, candidates who are experienced with Science Pedagogy, who have a demonstrated record of teaching project-based curricula and who are committed to teaching Science to non-Science Majors, will be given strong preference.
Course load is 2/3 and Tenure-track Faculty assist in curriculum development and teach all levels of Undergraduate courses. Also, participation in Program assessment and committee service are required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful candidates will ideally hold Ph.D.s or have demonstrated field experience and will have a minimum of three years’ postdoctoral teaching experience. Must demonstrate significant research activity. Leadership ability and team work experience are highly desirable.
