Faculty Positions in Big Data
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for tenure-track/tenured faculty positions in Big Data starting September 2014. The appointment will be at the assistant/associate professor level and will reside in the department of mathematics or computer and information science. Candidates with research and teaching interests in computational applied statistics or data-intensive computing and visualization are encouraged to apply. Research interests that are innovative, interdisciplinary and extend a growing faculty cluster in data science/analytics are preferred.
We are particularly looking for candidates with interests and experience in any aspect of the following core areas:
- In mathematics (one position): Statistical data reduction, network analysis, statistical/machine learning, predictive/visual analytics; and,
- In computer science (up to two positions): Data science, including but not limited to, work in data mining/discovery, massive data set processing/visualization, informatics.
Candidates with demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary areas such as engineering, natural/social science, health informatics, business (decision & information sciences) are especially encouraged to apply, but all fields of applications will be considered.
include a doctoral degree in computational mathematics, applied statistics, computer or information science or a related field at the time of appointment. Demonstrated evidence of excellence in research and teaching as appropriate to the candidate's rank is also required. Desired qualifications include a record of acquiring external funding and publication in top-tier journals/conferences with real-world impact and a commitment to cross-disciplinary teaming. Experience teaching courses related to data science/analytics is also highly desirable.
Faculty members are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally-funded research program, develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and undertake service activities.
The University has a newly established Center for Scientific Computing & Visualization Research and innovative B.S./M.S. degree proposals in Data Science that are at the forefront of trends in big data analytics currently in the approval process. The latter program is transdisciplinary and enables wide-ranging applications from behavioral/social/natural sciences, humanities, engineering, business, health, and law. Ph.D. program options in computational science and information systems are also in place. UMass participation in the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (http://www.mghpcc.org/
) provides outstanding research computing access.
