The College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Specialist (Steps I-III), in the area of Chemistry, at full time with an expected start date of July 1st 2020.
About the UC Berkeley, College of Chemistry - NMR Facility:
The College of Chemistry's NMR Facility (CoC-NMR) at the University of California, Berkeley is looking for a facility scientist. The appointment will take place in the College of Chemistry's rich and diverse research environment with a unique opportunity to collaborate in cutting-edge science with UC-Berkeley researchers. The CoC-NMR is a core research facility with seven Bruker NMR instruments ranging from 300 - 700 MHz, including a 500 MHz system with two MAS probes. The CoC-NMR has a large group of users with wide range of research interests from departments such as Chemistry, Physics, Bioengineering, Environmental Science, and Material Science, as well as from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which is located adjacent to the university campus. Campus and LBNL researchers require consultation and technical assistance from the CoC-NMR staff for solid- and solution-state NMR applications on research topics, including but not limited to metal organic frameworks and polymers in material science, small molecule chemistry and total synthesis, and inorganic and organo-metallic compounds in catalysis chemistry.

Position Description:

The position is for one year (12 months) with the possibility of renewal. Detailed description and expected qualifications for this position are listed below. Preferred start date is July 1st, 2020, but it can be flexible for doctoral students graduating over the summer.

The candidate will be responsible for:
  • Providing NMR application support to campus and off-campus entities as requested. This will involve solid-state NMR consultation, including sample services and data analysis, and routine solution-state NMR support for principle investigators as well as other facility users.
  • General facility maintenance, including minor repairs to the NMR instruments, and helping to troubleshoot common instrument problems, which will require flexible working hours.
  • Assisting with cryogen fills (helium and nitrogen). The candidate will ensure that the magnets' liquid nitrogen and liquid helium fills are performed in a timely and safe manner.
  • Providing NMR training to new students and postdoctoral researchers, taking into consideration their varying needs and diverse research efforts, and evaluating users' capability to use the instruments.
  • Assisting with proposals for instrumentation grant programs.


Basic Qualifications:
Advanced degree or enrolled in advanced degree program at the time of application. Basic qualifications must be met by the time of application.

Additional Qualifications:
Master's Degree or equivalent international degree by the start date of the job. Additional qualifications must be met by the start date of the job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or relevant field;
  • Expertise in operating Bruker NMR instruments;
  • Expertise in solid-state NMR;
  • Basic proficiency with solution-state NMR;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Basic proficiency with Linux OS is a plus but not essential.
  • Basic proficiency with powder and/or single crystal XRD is a plus but not essential.


The salary range for this full-time (%) position is $51,700 - 93,200 per year plus benefits.
