Project Overview

The Antimicrobial Interdisciplinary Research Group (AMR IRG) in the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) was created as a translational and entrepreneurial program to tackle the threat of antimicrobial drug resistance in Singapore and the world. The goal of the new project is to familiarize AMR IRG researchers with clinical translational science to position their research projects for practical impact in the form of patent applications, translational grant funding, and startup companies. This requires elements of experimental work, as well as clinically-oriented end points in the development of AMR drugs and diagnostics.

Job Description

Macrophages play a critical role in phagocytosing and eliminating invading bacteria. The emergency of antibiotic resistance has renewed interests in enhancing anti-bacterial activities of macrophages. We have identified compounds that drive macrophage polarization and enhance their reactivities against bacteria. The goal of this project is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which the select compounds enhance anti-bacterial activities, and translate the discoveries to therapeutics.

This position requires background knowledge in microbiology, immunology, molecular and cell biology, and analytical chemistry, and hand-on experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, transcriptional analysis, and mouse models of bacterial infection. The ideal candidate is expected to work independently, contribute significantly to the design and execution of experiments and development of new solutions in research projects.

The candidate is expected to work with supervisors to publish research papers and files patents, and help to guide junior researchers.

Specific responsibilities: Carrying out independent research in areas of microbial drug resistance, molecular mechanisms underlying pathogen-host immune cell interactions, and microbial immunotherapy

PhD in molecular and cell biology, immunology or related fields, productive research track record, motivated and independent.
