Position duration: The initial appointment will be made at 100% time for 1 year with a start date of Jan 1, 2023. This appointment is renewable based on satisfactory performance and availability of extramural funding and support.

Position description


The Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Specialist directed by Dr. Juan Carlos Martinez Oliveros). Research in the Dr. Martinez Oliveros' lab addresses the development of new instrumentation for space high energy applications. Particularly focused on X-rays for Helio- and Solar physics studies.
The assistant specialist will be expected to work collaboratively with a research team to calibrate and characterize the Timepix detectors that will be part of a sounding rocket and a cubesat payloads. The candidate will also be assisting with data analyses to study the relationship between high energetic solar events and the generation of submerge helioseimsmic sources via de use of Solar Dynamics Observatory data. Furthermore, they will be co-responsible for insuring the proper operation and maintenance of the Timepix2/3.

Responsibilities:
  • Will be responsible for helping with the characterization of Timepix2/3 based detectors.
  • Will be designing and creating experimental setups to test the Timepix2/3 detector performances.
  • Will be maintaining detector characterization progress records and documenting calibration procedures.
  • Will be assisting recurrent Timepix2/3 team meetings to track progress and communicate results with the FOXSi and PADRE teams.
  • Will conduct heliseismic analysis of compact sources correlated to signatures observed by the x-ray instrumetn STIX in Sol arOrbiter.

Will be responsible for disseminating new results in peer-reviewed journals and at international conferences.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)


Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

2 years of research experience.
Preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree in physical science, engineering or a related field
  • Previous knowledge in helio- or solar physics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to address issues
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work with demanding time-frames
  • Basic computer programming language skills in python.

Previous semiconductor detector calibration experience.
