The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a University Research Institute at NTU with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. EOS invites applications for the position of Research Assistant to join the EOS Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS) and work towards developing automated capabilities for satellite-based monitoring of natural hazards and mapping of disasters across Southeast Asia. The project aims to support mapping floods, land height change, volcanic and tectonic deformation, coastal change, and earthquake studies, and to provide timely information to regional decision makers and disaster responders across the region.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help with software development of new features and mission control of a near-real-time, partially automated system that will use remote sensing data for monitoring of hazards and mapping of disasters

  • Development of additional features in our web-based interface according to user requirements

  • Coordination with scientists at the Earth Observatory of Singapore to integrate post-processing algorithms for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data into the disaster response system

  • Troubleshoot issues raised and develop fixes to ensure our system is always ready for response

 

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information engineering, computer science, or data analytics

  • Experience with Python, Javascript and related tools and libraries

  • Experience working on cloud-computing platforms and remote sensing data to map natural hazards and disasters is advantageous

  • Willingness to learn tools associated with cloud-based distributed systems (e.g. AWS), web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Docker, Elasticsearch)

  • Willingness to learn scientific processing software and tools

  • Strong English and communication skills, both written and oral as medium of communication within the institute and for ease of communication with international collaborators

  • Strong program management skills (project workflow planning, trouble shooting, etc.)
