Position Overview

The University of Kansas seeks an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the field of Environmental Geology in support our growing environmental geology master’s programs, to begin January 1, 2023. The position is a non-tenure track, full-time, academic-year (9 mo.) appointment with a 3-year, renewable contract.

Given the primarily online/hybrid nature of our programs, a commitment to excellence in online/on-campus hybrid teaching is essential. Three years of prior teaching experience in environmental geology, geology or related fields is required. However, professional industry experience with demonstrated potential for teaching excellence can be substituted. We seek an instructor with the ability to teach six courses per year from the following courses or subjects: Introductory, physical, and chemical hydrogeology, environmental site assessment, soil and water remediation, hydrogeophysics, environmental microbial geochemistry, or other relevant topics. In some instances, the candidate may be expected to participate on graduate Capstone research panels.

In addition to teaching, this position will interact with students, faculty, and local and national environmental industry specialists as a member of our Industry Advisory Board. The development of collaborative industry or government partnerships is encouraged, especially in the Kansas City Metro region.

KU’s research residential campus is in the center of Lawrence, KS, a vibrant and culturally-rich community – a quintessential college town. KU’s Edwards campus sits in the nationally-recognized city of Overland Park – a community that encompasses 75.6 square miles of Johnson County, and has more than 200,000 residents, making it the second most populous city in Kansas and metropolitan Kansas City. The candidate will have access to resources at both campuses.

The University of Kansas Department of Geology and Edwards campus offer a Professional Science Master’s degree and an Environmental Certificate in Environmental Geology. The program attracts non-traditional adult learners from all over the U.S. and abroad and has recently doubled in size. Although most of the coursework for the programs can be completed by students online, weekly interactions with faculty members are required during interactive, face-to-face, on-campus hybrid lectures or via Zoom.

The University of Kansas is one of the leading research universities in the United States and is known for its strong tradition of academic excellence. Since 1909, the University of Kansas has been a member of the Association of American Universities, the premier consortium of research institutions in North America.

At the University of Kansas, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are an important part of our culture and university strategic plan. Applications from members of underrepresented groups are encouraged, noting the value that differences bring to our organization, students, staff, faculty, and community. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment.
