College of Sciences

The College of Sciences at Massey University is seeking to appoint a senior academic (Professor) to lead the newly formed School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences.

The newly established school is one of six within the college and will commence operation in January 2022. The school encompasses the discipline areas of mathematics; statistics; computer science and information technology. It has staff physically located on both the Auckland and Manawatū campuses and provides teaching, learning, and advising to more than 950 equivalent full-time students (EFTS) studying on campus or by distance.

The successful appointee can be based at either the Auckland or Palmerston North campuses.

Massey University is deeply committed to being a Te Tiriti-led university, demonstrating authentic leadership in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand as we uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the founding document of our nation, and its principles through our practice. We embrace this not just as an obligation but as a real opportunity for the nation and its people.

The Head of School works at both the school and college levels. A primary purpose of the role is to work with the College of Sciences Pro Vice-Chancellor and College Executive Group in implementing the University Strategy and associated college plans, through activities at both school and college levels. The College Executive Group has an important responsibility in leading and developing change to ensure the excellence and sustainability of activities within the college and works to achieve the outcomes of the college’s Roadmap Strategy (2021-2023) and successor articulations of college plans.

The Head of School leads academic excellence in teaching and research within the school and provides leadership to sustain a culture that brings Auckland and ManawatÅ«-based staff groups together with the college’s unified approach to teaching and learning.

As the successful appointee, you will be an experienced academic in a relevant scientific discipline, with a track record of leading groups of staff and a passion for excellence in teaching, research and service. You will clearly understand the opportunities and challenges facing the disciplines operating within the school, and demonstrate how the school can positively contribute to outcomes that have a national and international impact. You will demonstrate awareness and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its contribution to Aotearoa New Zealand society, and its relevance to the work of the University. Sound financial management skills, along with superior human resource management abilities are also essential competencies required to be successful in this role.

Reporting to the College of Sciences Pro Vice-Chancellor, the Head of School appointment will be for a fixed period of five years, with the potential to negotiate an extension at the end of that period or to revert to an academic role.

Your application must include your current curriculum vitae and a covering letter addressing the key responsibilities and person specifications detailed in the job description and aligning them with your capabilities. Late applications will not be accepted, as shortlisting will commence soon after the closing date. If successfully shortlisted, you will be required to give a presentation to staff and a formal selection panel interview will follow. Noting the current impact of COVID-19 on travel, the presentations and formal interviews may be conducted via Zoom.

Academic enquiries should be directed to Professor Ray Geor, Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Sciences by email at
