The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position in evolutionary biology, quantitative genetics, and genomics in the lab of Rachel Brem. The over-arching goals of the funded projects are to understand how evolution builds new traits, using long-diverged fungi from the wild as model systems. We focus on cases where a genetically tractable lineage has evolved unique characters whose mechanisms are accessible to genetic and genomic dissection. The postdoc will develop methods for, carry out, and analyze fungal transgenesis experiments and high-throughput sequencing screens to identify and validate variant genes underlying phenotypic differences between fungal species. Responsibilities will include genetic manipulations; troubleshooting and verification; phenotyping assays, including growth and metabolism; and computational and statistical data analysis. The postdoc will lead writeup and publication of experimental findings. Our postdoctoral projects are a great fit for post-Ph.D. trainees looking to hone their skills in evolutionary genetics and emerge onto the job market in a few years with a great molecular story.
Qualifications Basic qualifications

- The candidate should have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.

- Wet and dry-lab expertise in quantitative genetics, genomics, and/or molecular evolution.
- Experience in experimental preparation of Illumina sequencing libraries and computer scripting for population-genomic analyses is preferred.
- Successful applicants should be highly motivated and creative.
- Should demonstrate the ability to work independently and as a part of a team and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- PhD or equivalent degree program in genetics, genomics, or related field preferred.
