Applicants are sought for a postdoctoral researcher position at Louisiana State University to work in the area of exoplanets and/or time-domain survey astronomy. The researcher will work within Professor Matthew Penny’s group on analysis of data from ongoing surveys, or preparations for upcoming surveys, of exoplanet demographics using the transit or gravitational microlensing techniques. The researcher will also have the opportunity to develop and apply machine learning techniques in collaboration with members of LSU’s Center for Computation and Technology. Past experience in one of the group’s areas of research is not required. Researcher may be required to travel nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities: Conduct research in one or more of the following areas:
1. Analysis and collection of data for the MISHAPS transit survey, which may include crowded field photometry analysis, signal searches in time series photometry, survey detection efficiency analysis, modeling of planetary transit data;
2. Data analysis of ground-based microlensing survey data, which may include crowded field photometry, microlensing lightcurve modeling, survey detection efficiency analysis.
3. Perform and analyze simulations of future space-based microlensing surveys by WFIRST and Euclid.
The researcher will write up their work for publication in journals, present their work at conferences and collaboration meetings, and assist or lead the preparation of observing proposals. Additional duties include assisting in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications: In their materials, applicants should detail relevant experience and interests in exoplanet research, time-domain and/or crowded field photometry, gravitational microlensing, high-performance and high-throughput computing, machine learning and big data techniques. Experience in one or more of these is preferred but not required.
