The University at Buffalo (UB) Geography Department seeks Crime Research Analysts to work in the Erie Crime Analysis Center. Crime Research Analysts will perform basic crime analysis including responding to crime trend inquiries and evaluating and identifying crime series, patterns, and trends.

The successful candidates will:
  • Perform crime analysis for local law enforcement and other authorized agencies
  • Provide police personnel with crime analysis for tactical operations, strategic planning, and manpower allocation
  • Support special programs and projects
  • Provide information and assistance to the public and others, regarding assigned programs and services
  • Perform a variety of tasks relative to analysis of crime and related information.
 
General supervision for these positions will be from civilian or commissioned supervisory or management staff at the Erie Crime Analysis Center. This center serves analytical needs for the Buffalo Police Department, Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Cheektowaga Police Department, Erie County District Attorney’s Office, and New York State Police. Position will report to the Buffalo Police Headquarters in downtown Buffalo, NY.

These positions are affiliated with the Department of Geography and the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA), at the University at Buffalo (UB), a large R1 Research University on the shores of Lake Erie.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with a proven record of related experience.
  • Experience using the research and analytical techniques for the extraction and presentation of crime data and the development and dissemination of crime and policing data.
  • Understanding of the principles of statistical analysis and mathematics.
  • Training and experience in the methods of crime analysis.
  • Experience in program analysis and report generation.
  • Competence in computer applications, including database managers, data analysis, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Understanding of the operational characteristics of Geographic Information Systems.
  • Candidates must be trustworthy and have the ability to address issues with confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
