Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non-profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and located on the UC Berkeley campus. A key focus of the IGI is accelerating translation of CRISPR-based approaches to address real-world problems in human health, agriculture, and climate.

Under the general direction and with the Supervisor, the employee is responsible for management and technical support of IGI Plant Genomics Research Facility. The employee will oversee inventory and ordering of supplies, maintenance and acquisition of laboratory equipment, and coordination of lab safety efforts. The employee will handle inter-laboratory collaboration, including exchange of materials and information. The employee will be expected to contribute original ideas to the research program. The employee will also produce materials for use in experiments, such as the introduction of DNA and RNPs into plants and regeneration of plants via plant tissue culture. Plant species could include cacao, soybean and other model and non-model systems. Will maintain experiments in growth chamber and greenhouse conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research to generate transgenic and edited plants and tissue culture lines (see definition *)
  • Maintenance of laboratory inventory & ordering of research supplies
  • Acquisition of new equipment; coordinating service of equipment.
  • Technical training of IGI PGTF researchers and facility users
  • Handle disposal of hazardous and/or regulated waste.
  • Serve as facility safety officer.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills (keeping track of schedule, paperwork, sample storage, and inventory).
  • Excellent lab management skills.
  • General computer skills (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel) for keeping track of results and sharing progress.
  • Extensive experience with plant tissue culture and transformation techniques.


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training / experience.
  • 5 yrs or more experience in academic and/or industry plant genomics or transformation lab.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or Cell Biology)
  • Experience serving as laboratory safety officer.
  • Experience training and managing laboratory personnel.
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques: PCR; electrophoresis; western blot; microscopy.
  • Experience with alternative transformation techniques, e.g. biolistics and electroporation.
