The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Kansas (KU) seeks applicants for an Assistant Professorship in experimental condensed matter physics (CMP) with an emphasis on quantum information science or areas closely related to it to begin August 18, 2020.
The KU condensed matter physics group has research programs on nanomaterials, renewable energy, low-dimensional physics, superconductivity, quantum computing, organic semiconductors, ultrafast laser spectroscopy, and computational condensed matter physics. The group also plays a key role in promoting university-wide material research efforts. Qualifying candidates must have a doctorate degree in physics or a closely related field. A strong record of research and commitment to excellence in teaching are required. Candidates with research interests in quantum information science or areas closely related to it and compatible with the existing efforts in the department are particularly encouraged to apply. Ability to make use of existing infrastructure and equipment within the department is preferred.

40% – Research: The Department of Physics & Astronomy maintains a national profile of high quality faculty research. An active and productive research program with impactful publications in condensed matter physics and related areas is expected, as it contributes towards establishing and maintaining a national and international reputation.
40% – Teaching/Advising:
Teach two classes per academic year in physics at the graduate or undergraduate levels.
Participate in the advising of undergraduate and graduate students.
Participate in the advising of masters and doctoral students with the goal of actively participating as a dissertation/thesis director and professional mentor for doctoral students; supervise Honors students.
Conduct course evaluation with student input as directed by the university.
Hold regular office hours for students of courses taught.
Adhere to program, College, and University Policies.
20% – Service:
Attend Departmental meetings.
Contribute service to the Department and perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Serve on committees at the Departmental, College, and University levels as the opportunities arise.
Participate in professional service that may include reviewing scholarly articles, activity in national organizations, organizing meetings or workshops.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and conduct a vigorous research program in condensed matter physics.
Teach two courses in physics per academic year at the graduate or undergraduate levels.
Participate in service work for the Department, College, and University.
Supervise undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students.
Participate in national professional conferences and meetings, publish research results in major journals of the discipline, and conduct other activities appropriate to the discipline.

Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.
Doctorate degree in physics or closely related fields experience.
Established record of research in experimental condensed matter physics, materials physics or other areas closely related to quantum information science.
Commitment to excellence in teaching physics at graduate and undergraduate levels, as evidenced by teaching statement.
At least two years of research experience in quantum information science or areas closely related to it.
