Department T314 Dept. Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering
Application Deadline Open until filled
Position Start Date Available immediately
  • Post-Doc
  • Physics - General
The School of Science is one of the six schools of Aalto University.Through our internationally-acclaimed high-level research we aim to make a significant impact on society.

The Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering is looking for

Post-Doctoral Researcher in Physics of Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation is broadly used in industrial and medical applications since sound provides a route to influence the micro-bubble oscillations. With e.g. ultrasound, one can actuate a micro-bubble, converting the bubble to a micron-scale tool, which has led to the development of a large variety of applications in different length scales.

We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher to work in the field of acoustic cavitation in ultrasonic frequencies. The specific research topic has a high level of novelty and while the project is basic research, we foresee a large number of applications in a large number of fields including medical devices, microactuators and drug delivery.

Your background and expertise
The ideal candidate has a PhD and strong background in fields such as acoustic cavitation, physical acoustics and/or ultrasonics. You should have a strong capability to design and conduct experimentation related to acoustic cavitation as well as have applied mathematical, theoretical and/or simulation experience in the same field. While not mandatory, a bonus is to have knowledge in one or more of the following areas: acoustic streaming, Bjaerknes forces, cavitation-induced shock waves and atomization.

Ideally, you are a strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills. You are capable of managing your own workload and can work both independently and as a part of the team. You are expected to contribute to instructing PhD students. Therefore, we expect successful supervison experience or potential to supervise successfully.

You demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm and commitment to the highest level academic research with ambitious goals and you have published high-impact research.

What we offer
You will work along with 10-15 other researchers from Medical Ultrasonics Laboratory (MEDUSA) (main site of your research) Aalto University and from collaborator laboratories at Aalto University and University College London. MEDUSA's research is currently funded by Academy of Finland, Business Finland and EU.

The salary level is fixed to departmental levels based on career stage starting from 3810€ for a Post-doc. While you are funded for 1-2 years for a dedicated project, we expect you to apply your own academic funding for further research.

Ready to apply?
Please, submit your application through our online recruitment system by using the link on Aalto University’s web page ("Apply”). Please, provide the following as separate documents along with your application.
  • 1-page motivation letter
  • CV with a list of publications
  • Your PhD thesis
  • List of references
  • Optionally a summary of an preliminary project plan (1-2 pages) to which you aim to start applying your own research funding. This summary should include a direct connection to ultrasound and medicine.

For more information
Please contact Prof. Heikki Nieminen, the Head of MEDUSA by email: and in application process related questions HR Coordinator Noora Koskivaara To learn more about our lab, please visit

The call is open until Sep 19, 2021, but it may be closed earlier if a suitable candidate has been identified before the closing date. The applications will be reviewed on a continuous basis.
