Departmental Overview

The Functional Genomics Laboratory (FGL) is a core facility within the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences - Berkeley (QB3 - Berkeley). QB3's mission is to support biotechnology research within the broadly defined California research community, and the FGL's role within QB3 is to provide high throughput genomics assays and library preparation services. The FGL works closely and under joint leadership with the Vincent J. Coates Genome Sequencing Laboratory (GSL) and Computational Genomics Resource Laboratory (CGRL) to provide a full suit of genomics and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) services, from experimental design to execution and analysis. Together, these three QB3 Genomics cores perform $4 million in annual services for UC Berkeley, other UC campuses, LBNL, and myriad other academic and private institutions world-wide.

We are looking for a Staff Research Associate to take on variety of NGS library preparation services and assist with operations at the FGL. The SRA will work independently to fulfill client researcher requests and complete projects pertaining to NGS library preparation and quality control analysis. The position requires skill in general molecular biology techniques and interpretation of common size and purity assays for nucleic acids. Knowledge in molecular biology methods should be sufficient to troubleshoot routine issues, but rare or complex issues will be escalated to senior lab personel. Additionally, the SRA will assist in the organization of the lab and maintenance and operation of laboratory instruments and robots.

The SRA will work directly with and report to the FGL Manager and Director. The SRA will communicate with client researchers to answer questions about submissions and services, as well as provide project updates, and will coordinate with the GSL to facilitate project hand-offs.
