Tufts University invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Earth and Climate Sciences in Oceanography, beginning September 1st, 2023. The faculty member will teach three undergraduate courses annually; perform high-quality, externally-funded research in their area of specialism; and actively engage undergraduate students in research. Candidates applying at the Associate Professor level or above will additionally take on leadership roles within the department.

The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences is an undergraduate-only program that is beginning a major expansion in faculty and infrastructure to offer a new major and research expertise in Climate Science. Once the expansion is complete, our department will offer complementary undergraduate majors in Earth Science and Climate Science.

The successful candidate in Oceanography will teach required and elective courses that focus on the physical workings of the ocean and its critical role in Earth's climate system. While the Oceanography faculty member will primarily teach within the Climate Science track, we particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching interests intersect with Earth Science (e.g. marine geology and paleoceanography). We encourage all faculty to take advantage of opportunities for collaborative teaching and research with other faculty at the university.

Qualifications

Qualifications include: a Ph.D., post-doctoral experience, and demonstrated potential for research supported by external funding. Candidates are expected to be inspiring undergraduate teachers and to initiate impactful research that incorporates undergraduate involvement.

Application Instructions

All application materials must be submitted via Interfolio at apply.interfolio.com/113049. Please submit the following: 1) a cover letter; 2) a teaching statement that demonstrates a commitment to undergraduate education; 3) a research statement; 4) a curriculum vitae; 5) a statement that describes an approach and commitment to improving diversity; and 6) the names (with contact addresses) of three referees. Questions about the position should be directed to Professor Andrew Kemp, Chair of the Search Committee, at andrew.kemp@tufts.edu. Review of applications will begin October 24th, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled.
