The Department of Chemistry at Lake Superior State University invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Bioanalytical Chemistry. This position will begin in August 2020.

The Bioanalytical Chemist will contribute their academic, laboratory, and professional expertise to programs including Biochemistry, Chemistry, Cannabis Chemistry, and Forensic Chemistry. Instructional duties may include General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Biochemistry in addition to participation in applied research activities involving undergraduate students. Leadership opportunities exist for curriculum development that prepares students for graduate and professional school and/or the work force. Under the direction of the Dean of the College of Science and Environment, the successful candidate will provide course instruction utilizing multiple teaching formats, including lecture, laboratory, practicum and/or online delivery. Sault Ste. Marie is uniquely situated on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where we share the international border with Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The two cities with a combined population of 100,000 pair the advantages of a larger city with the safety and comfort of a smaller town.

Duties and Responsibilities
1) Twelve contract hours of instruction and other assigned responsibilities per semester.
2) Provide a minimum of five hours devoted to office hours for the purpose of student support.
3) Participation in professional and scholarly activities, including but not limited to applied research with undergraduates and dissemination of knowledge through publication, community, or faculty presentations.
4) Safely conduct and supervise laboratory procedures and experiments.
5) Advising and recruitment of students.
6) Course and program assessment.
7) University/community service.

Minimum Qualifications
M.S. in Analytical Chemistry, Bioanalytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
Experience operating chemical instrumentation including mass spectrometers.
Experience teaching at the undergraduate level.

Desired Qualifications
Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Analytical Chemistry, Bioanalytical Chemistry, or Biochemistry.
Graduate coursework in biochemistry and analytical chemistry.
Experience instructing from delivery formats including classroom, online, and/or blended.
Experience in the areas of Forensic Chemistry and/or Cannabis Chemistry (ability to pass a federal background check required for Cannabis Chemistry).
Experience facilitating applied research activities involving undergraduate students.

Physical Demands
Typical demands of teaching, research and advising at the university level. The ability to lift 25 pounds. The ability to manage the physical demands of 12 faculty contract hours per semester and conduct applied research activities with undergraduates. Occasional possibility of overload and night classes. Limited Travel. Driver’s license. Safely conduct and supervise laboratory procedures and experiments.
