DEPARTMENT CHAIR – DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
Applications are invited for the position of Chair, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science. Applications from external and internal candidates, who must hold at least the rank of Associate Professor with tenure or its international equivalent, will be considered. A record of high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision, and research in Biology is required, as well as some administrative experience. Applicants must have a PhD degree in Biology, or related discipline, and a strong record of research productivity in the form of publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals, awards, invited talks and other scholarly achievements. The successful candidate will have a clear vision for the direction of the Department, demonstrated leadership ability and integrity, excellent communication skills, and a willingness to be a strong advocate for the Department. The successful candidate will be energetic and able to recognize, take, and create opportunities. They must have the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships both within Science and across the Western community, as well as in the Canadian Biology community.
The Chair will consult with the Dean on Departmental budgetary requirements and administer the Departmental budget. The Chair will also be expected to develop and facilitate the implementation of a Departmental academic, research and administrative plan that will aim to position the Department within the top tier of Canadian Biology departments. Furthermore, the Chair will be a part of the Faculty of Science leadership team and as such, will help develop a new academic plan for the Faculty of Science. These plans must be consistent with one another, as well as with the strategic plans of the University. The Chair will develop and implement a strategy for mentoring, developing, and supporting Departmental faculty and staff across career stages, with a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The Department of Biology has a broad range of interests, with recognized expertise in insect biology, evolutionary and ecological genetics, animal physiology and behaviour, locomotion and migration, vertebrate developmental biology, plant stress biology, soil-microbe interactions, and fungal biodiversity. The Department and Western have built world-class, unique research facilities including the Advanced Facility for Avian Research, the Biotron Centre for Experimental Climate Change Research, the Environmental Sciences Western Field Station, the London Regional Genomics Centre, the Brain and Mind Institute and specialized facilities for imaging and microscopy. The Department also has strong connections with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

External candidates will be appointed with tenure at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor as appropriate. The Chair appointment is normally a (renewable) five-year term. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment is anticipated to commence on July 1, 2020.
