In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven, Faculty of Engineering Science, Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), research unit MICAS, there is a part-time (10%) academic vacancy in the area of Modeling and Calibration of Nano-Electronic Devices for Application-Technology co-Design of Integrated Circuits on campus Arenberg (Heverlee). We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent interdisciplinary research record and with educational competence within the field of designing, modeling and calibrating novel transistor architectures, including device physics as well as fabrication and advanced characterization expertise. The research should enable application-technology co-design of integrated circuits for future applications including life sciences. The research group MICAS is a research unit in the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) and is a world leader in the field of integrated circuit design (analog, mixed-signal, digital, RF and microwave) across a wide range of different IC technologies and applications. Over the past decades, the research team of MICAS has achieved many breakthrough chip innovations and has created several spinoff companies. The faculty members have an extensive national and international network, both in the academic and business world. MICAS can build upon an excellent research infrastructure. With this vacancy MICAS wants to keep a close link to semiconductor device research.
  • You strengthen existing research lines and provide additional expertise in the field of device physics, modeling, calibration and characterization of novel transistor architectures, such as single-molecule sensing FETs, nanofluidic-nanoelectronic and other biodevices, etc.  Besides building up a deep understanding of the device physics, you can assist in the design of new devices for microelectronic systems, e.g. lab or cells on chips, to enable application-technology co-design.
  • You set up collaborations within and outside of the department, including reinforcing the research collaboration with imec.
  • You work closely together with other members of the MICAS research group and the ESAT department, and you actively assist in the carrying out of ongoing and new research projects.
  • You support national and international collaborations of the MICAS research group and you help promote and further develop these. You also actively assist in the development of future research projects.
  • You are capable of acquiring competitive funding. You strive for excellence in your research and thus provide a contribution to the continued development of the department.
  • You publish at the highest scientific level, acquire resources for fundamental and applied research, develop international collaborations and supervise PhDs at an international level.
  • You give the necessary attention to the valorisation of your research.
  • You ensure high-quality education within the area of semiconductor physics and semiconductor devices, including device modeling and IC technology in one or more of the university’s education programs, with a clear commitment to the quality of the program as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the faculty/university through the supervision of master theses and as a promotor of PhD students.
  • You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuven’s vision on activating and research-based education and make use of the possibilities for educational professionalisation offered by the faculty and the university.
  • Your teaching task is determined in consultation and based on your specific profile, and will be in line with your part-time appointment. You are also expected to take up responsibility as academic program director for education programs in nano science, engineering and technology. 
  • You are prepared to provide scientific, social and university-internal services.
  • You stay up-to-date with the practices of nanotechnology and modeling of nanoscale devices.
As this professorship is aimed at reinforcing the interaction in research between imec and KU Leuven, only researchers at imec with a substantial appointment (at least for the duration of this professorship) qualify for the position.
  • You have a PhD degree in engineering science, electrical/electronic engineering, nano technology or a related subject.
  • You have a strong research profile in the fields of physics, modeling and calibration of novel nanoelectronic devices, for computation, storage, information processing and (bio)sensing, their production technology and the link to application-technology co-design. The quality of your research is proven by publications in prominent/international journals, invited presentations and through international research collaborations. 
  • You show an interdisciplinary approach to research, building bridges between various fields and aiming at innovative concepts.
  • You have built strong collaborations with academic as well as industrial partners.
  • You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
  • You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.
  • A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
  • The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch, and you are expected to teach courses in Dutch (requiring C1 level Dutch).

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed 10% in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor, for a period of 5 years, repeatedly renewable after positive evaluation.
