Departmental Overview

The teaching and research activities of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms. This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, including biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenesis and neurobiology. The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, ranging from viruses and microbes through plants, roundworms, annelids, arthropods, and mollusks to fish, amphibia, and mammals. The faculty of the department is organized into five divisions: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cell and Developmental Biology; Genetics, Genomics and Development; Neurobiology; and Immunology and Pathogenesis.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare complex media (weigh and mix basic components, adjust the pH and autocalve), frequently used buffers and standard stock solution.
  • Grow yeast and bacterial cells, express and purify recombinant proteins, assay certain enzyme activities, apply site-directed mutagenesis under close supervision.
  • Keep laboratory benches, counters, sink and washing area clean and organized.


Required Qualifications
  • Understands operation of basic equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic job duties and requirements.
  • Ability to follow directions and perform repetitive tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate required information and keep accurate records of work perform.
  • High school diploma and/or equivalent experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with handling lab equipment and glassware.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.


Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.

Other Information

This is a 12-month, full-time (40-hours per week), Limited (temporary) position.

This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Technical Unit (TX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE). The current bargaining agreement manual can be found at:

Article 31.B.3.b - The automatic conversion to career status, will not occur when the position into which the employee is hired is not an "ongoing" position, in that the position is established and funded for less than a year at any percent of time.
