Description

The Division of Math and Natural Sciences at the University of Michigan-Flint seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level starting in January or August 2025. A candidate is sought with a strong background in forest ecology/forest management. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Biology/Forestry or relevant field. ABD candidates will be considered, but any job offer will be conditional on completing the Ph.D. before starting the position. A successful candidate must have: a broad background in biology (e.g. an undergraduate education that included courses such as cell biology, genetics, organismal biology, ecology, zoology, etc.). A candidate with post-doctoral research or management experience is preferred. Candidates must articulate and demonstrate teaching excellence for undergraduate and graduate forest ecology/forest management courses (with field and laboratory components). Faculty filling this position will work collaboratively with colleagues in course activities, and there are opportunities to work collaboratively with colleagues in research. Faculty filling this position will provide service to the Discipline, Department, College, University, Community and Profession. Applicants must be willing to actively involve graduate and undergraduate students in research and develop a robust research program that includes securing external grant funding and publishing in scholarly journals.

The Biology Department has sixteen full-time faculty and offers undergraduate degrees in Human Biology B.S., Biology B.S., Molecular Biology and Biotechnology B.S., Wildlife Biology B.S. along with standalone and dual-degree M.S. programs in Biology. Faculty in our programs provide engaged instruction and mentorship to students through a combination of course-work and faculty-led research projects. Faculty are provided with research space, access to a cadaver lab and vivarium, plus a variety of chemical and biological science instrumentation such as LC-MS, Bruker 400 MHz NMR, HPLC, Spectroscopic Instrumentation (UV-vis, Fluorimeter, FTIR), standard and real-time PCR, cell culture facilities, cell imaging and microscopy instrumentation, and more. Qualifications

Applicants of all ranks require an earned doctorate in Biology, or relevant field by the appointment date. Applicants for tenured Associate and Full Professor must have academic experience demonstrating excellent teaching in experiential settings and a strong scholarship record, with a history of successful grant writing.

  • Ph.D. in biology/forestry or related area with a strong background in forest ecology/forest management. ABD candidates will be considered, but any job offer will be conditional on completing the Ph.D. before starting the position.   • Significant coursework related to forest ecology/forest management

  • Undergraduate coursework which includes broad training in biology.

  • Ability to teach freshman biology major courses as well as upper-level courses in forest ecology/forest management.

  • Ability to successfully carry out a research program at UM-Flint involving undergraduate and graduate students, securing external grants and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Candidates will work collaboratively with colleagues in course activities and have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in research activities.

  • Candidates will participate in service activities at the department, college, and university levels. Candidates should be committed to the “engaged service” component of our institutional mission.

Mode of Work

Hybrid
