The Department of Forestry at the University of Kentucky is currently seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor of Forest Management. This is a 12-month, tenure-track appointment with anticipated starting date on August 1, 2020. Responsibilities include approximately 60% research, and 30% teaching, and 10% service. This position will be instrumental in building a nationally recognized research program, as demonstrated by success in acquiring extramural funding, publication in leading refereed journals, and graduate student recruitment and mentorship. This position will work in an interdisciplinary environment with researchers in related fields, foster collaborative teaching and research opportunities with departmental faculty, and assist in extension and outreach addressing critical forest management issues. Expected teaching responsibilities include courses in forest management within the Department’s Bachelor of Science Forestry program and other undergraduate and graduate courses aligned with the successful candidate’s area of expertise such as forest measurements, forest operations, human dimensions of forestry, and/or introductory forestry and natural resources courses. Contributions to the interdepartmental undergraduate program in Natural Resources and Environmental Science are expected.
The Department of Forestry is one of fourteen academic departments in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment. Departmental activities include undergraduate instruction in forestry and natural resources, graduate instruction in forestry, research, and Cooperative Extension Service programs. The Department has a range of forestry and natural resource research emphasis areas including forest health and ecological restoration, forest hydrology and watershed management, landscape and spatial ecology, natural resource policy and economics, silviculture and forest operations, urban ecology, and wildlife ecology and conservation biology. The candidate will have the opportunity to play a significant role within the Forest Health Research and Education Center, www.foresthealthcenter.org, a partnership between the University of Kentucky, USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station, and Kentucky Division of Forestry. The Department has significant off-campus resources available to support its mission including the nationally recognized Wood Utilization Center and Robinson Forest, both located at the Robinson Center for Appalachian Resource Sustainability in eastern Kentucky.
