Departmental Overview
The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a non-profit, academic research organization formed through the partnership of UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and located on the UC Berkeley campus. A key focus of the IGI is accelerating translation of CRISPR-based approaches to address real-world problems in human health, agriculture, and climate.

Responsibilities
- Serves as the organization expert on a significant policy issue(s) related to climate change, sustainable agriculture and genome engineering.
- Formulates new policies and procedures for implementation relating to climate change, carbon dioxide removal, carbon credits, agriculture, sustainability.
- Proposes, convenes and leads on policy and planning committees and working groups that have significant campus-wide impact.
- Lead committees or as a representative in national or international fora focused on regulation, governance, or ethics of genome editing.
- Collaborates with high level contacts of a sensitive nature, requiring discretion and diplomacy in order to negotiate with or persuade officials to adopt the proposed solution or program/process recommendations.
- Represents the organization in public speaking engagements.
- Develop and execute outreach activities that expand and strengthen IGI's ties to the communities affected by our scientific research, including making use of different public engagement models such as community based participatory research or public dialogue.
- Identifies policy issues of importance to the organization / initiative which frequently cross organizational lines and require research of state and national organizations; develops appropriate analytical and procedural framework for addressing the issues.
- Ideate and lead multiple projects simultaneously, across a broad spectrum of programs and initiatives that require complex analyses on topics such as responsible governance of emerging technologies or equitable allocation of resources.
- Plans, develops and implements new programs and organizational structure changes required to implement new policy. Conduct and analyze public opinion surveys and conduct public understanding research to integrate data into outreach modalities.
- Provides leadership, guidance, education and policy development on climate and agricultural impact and represents the organization to external constituencies.
- Participates with high level organizational or program leaders in strategic thinking and planning.
- Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the organization / initiative.
- Manages a significant budget and portfolio of projects related to climate change, sustainable agriculture, genome engineering and metagenomics.
- Applies for grant funding to support new programs.
- Experience with translation of agricultural products.
- Ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in a complex changing environment.
- Analyzes, predicts and advises constituencies regarding direction in the absence of clear external and internal practices.
- Oversees the development of key messages, talking points and policy briefs.
Required Qualifications
- At least 7 years of professional experience related to the job qualifications.
- Expert knowledge of and/or ability to learn about common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
- Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
- Highly skilled in all levels of project management.
- Experienced conducting partner outreach and recruitment, relationship building, and communications.
- Expert knowledge of policies and analysis related to carbon capture, climate change, sustainable agriculture and genome engineering.
- Expert analytical / problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated experience convening stakeholders and leading workshops and working groups.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expert knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures and external regulatory requirements in the policy domain.
Education/Training:
- Masters or PhD degree in plant biology, molecular biology, genome editing, public policy, environmental ethics and/or equivalent experience/training; or similar education level in social sciences, particularly as it pertains to genomic technologies.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
- The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $110,000.00 - $150,000.00.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
- This is a hybrid position, eligible for 50% remote capability.
