The Bioinspired Crystallization Lab at Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, FL) is currently inviting applications for a PhD Graduate Student. We are seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates interested in studying mineralized biomaterials and biomineralization in vivo and in vitro.
The successful candidate will
Develop functional hybrid materials based on hierarchical organic scaffolds derived from renewable resources and inorganic minerals. Versatile hybrid biomaterials will find extensive use in biomedical, civil, mechanical, and ocean applications.
Study biomineralization in biological samples from marine or terrestrial environment
Investigate chemical model systems that mimic fundamental processes at organic-inorganic interfaces, in particular crystallization in confinement or transmembrane ion transport.
Within the PhD project, the graduate student will employ multidisciplinary approaches, combining chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science. Biologically occurring specimens will be examined using a broad variety of experimental techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), X-ray diffraction, chemical imaging (confocal Raman microscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray microscopy), and materials testing.
Education and/or Experience
The ideal candidates should have or be expected to receive a B. Sc. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related scientific discipline. Creative thinking, excellent communication skills and an ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required. Experience in the above-mentioned characterization techniques will be considered a plus.
