Subject: Seeking qualified candidate for a postdoctoral research position in geochemistry

The Laboratory for the Chemistry of Construction Materials (LC2) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is seeking a postdoctoral candidate starting October 2018 (or earlier, open until filled). Special emphasis is placed on recruiting candidates with a Ph.D. in earth and environmental sciences, geology, materials science, chemical engineering or applied chemistry with expertise in low-temperature geochemistry and a capacity for world-class research that is reflected in a strong publication record.

The successful candidate will work on investigating the kinetics of dissolution of silicate solids and chemical pathways to control and affect their reactivity, particularly in complex alkaline environments. Special focus will be placed on understanding the mechanisms of dissolution and processes using appropriate geochemical techniques and methods. For general background, candidates are referred to:

For full consideration, the applicant should possess the following qualifications: (a) a Ph.D. degree from a reputable university in a topic of relevance (see above) and an interest in pursuing a research career, (b) a fundamental understanding of mineral/glass/rock dissolution behaviors in aqueous media, and © an interest in working in a fast-paced, collaborative research environment.

Applicants with relevant experience will be given special preference. The successful candidate will be expected to take personal initiative to structure tasks to meet project functions and author novel publications. The candidate will also be expected to mentor students, teach courses in relation to expertise (if an opportunity arises), fulfill project administration functions and assist in proposal development. The candidate is expected to meet programmed project goals, and can respond to deliverable timelines as are typical in "academia-industry" collaborative research.
