Job Description

The School of Cybersecurity at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank, to begin in Fall 2024. We seek exceptional candidates with a strong research track in Cybersecurity. The successful candidate is expected to perform teaching, research, and service, demonstrate a passion for student success, recruitment, and retention, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff. Excellent collaborative research opportunities are available with ODU’s School of Data Science, and nearby NASA Langley Research Center, DoE’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, National Institute of Aerospace, and the Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center. Exceptional candidates may request tenure upon appointment.

About the School of Cybersecurity:
The School of Cybersecurity at ODU was established in 2020 and houses one of the largest cybersecurity programs in the nation. It represents an interdisciplinary effort bringing together over 40 faculty members with a wide range of expertise in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, information technology, criminal justice, cyber laws, psychology, and philosophy. The interdisciplinary team enables a holistic approach to cybersecurity problems. The school offers a BS in Cybersecurity with majors in Cybersecurity and Cyber Operations, and an MS in Cybersecurity with a total of about 1450 students. The school has been designated by NSA and DHS as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO) and a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) and has been rapidly growing. We added 8 new faculty members last year and are recruiting 5 more this year.

Cybersecurity research is flourishing in the school. A diverse portfolio of research projects has been developed by and housed in the school with a total of over $12 million in active research funding from highly competitive programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Naval Research (ONR), National Security Agency (NSA), the State of Virginia, and the industry. The school is also supported through the Coastal Virginia Center for Cybersecurity Innovation (COVA CCI), an engine for research, innovation, and commercialization of next-generation cybersecurity technologies, which is part of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative and funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our faculty work closely with the cybersecurity industry, military units, government agencies, and educational institutions to promote cybersecurity workforce development and research and innovation.

The school has recently moved into the Cyber Innovation Park, which occupies 10,000 square feet of newly renovated space for classrooms, student commons, cyber labs, offices, meeting rooms, and a data center. The school operates a unique cybersecurity research and education infrastructure, established in 2017 and enhanced since then by multi-million dollars of cyber infrastructure grants and state investment. It enables students to carry out hands-on exercises, learn cybersecurity tools and techniques, and conduct cutting-edge cybersecurity research via experimentation inside the lab or remotely through a web interface.
