DESCRIPTION
Assistant Specialist – Biochemistry, Biophysics, & Structural Biology – Department of Molecular and Cell Biology – Collins Lab

Description
The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Specialist in the Collins Lab with a background in Biochemistry, Biophysics, & Structural Biology. The position is full-time with an expected start date of October 2019.

Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the incumbent will be to conduct research about the mechanism of a eukaryotic reverse transcriptase and about protein-nucleic acid interaction. The incumbent will work on experiments designed in consultation with, and under the general supervision of, the laboratory head. Research will use cell culture, extract preparation, cloning, mutagenesis, DNA and RNA and protein purification, and primer extension assays for polymerase activity. Polymerase protein will be produced, purified and structurally characterized.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application)

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent international degree

Additional Qualifications (by start date)

  • 1-2 years of academic or research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with mammalian and bacterial cell culture, molecular biology and biochemistry methods.
  • Experience with working collaboratively and keeping a lab notebook. Projects will span a wide range of areas, and the candidate should be flexible, creative, and able to master new techniques as needed.
  • Experience with on-campus purchasing and inventory systems is strongly preferred.

Appointment
This position reports to Dr. Kathleen Collins. The initial appointment will be at 100% time for one year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Salary
$49,700 – $51,800 depending on qualifications. This position provides full benefits.
