JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Department of Physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute invites applications for an Instructor or Assistant Teaching Professor of Physics to begin in the Fall of 2022. WPI seeks an outstanding faculty candidate in physics and STEM education that aligns with WPI's Strategic Plan of an inclusive community with purpose-driven education and research. The candidate would work closely with the STEM Education Center and the Teacher Preparation Program.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We invite applications for an Instructor or Assistant Teaching Professor position in Physics, with the successful applicant's highest degree ultimately determining which title applies to the position. Job responsibilities will include many of the following, dependent on the interests and strengths of the successful applicant:

  • Teaching introductory and intermediate undergraduate physics courses.
  • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate physics students in their careers.
  • Mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students in projects and education research.
  • Mentoring and observing Teacher Candidates at the secondary level in the Teacher Prep Program.
  • Teaching the "Methods and Pedagogy" seminar for Physics Peer Learning Assistants.
  • Co-teaching and leading improvements on a "Teaching Methods" course for teacher prep students across STEM disciplines.
  • Co-teaching the Teacher Prep Practicum Seminar.
  • Promoting connections across, and being a leader in, the WPI teaching and learning community.



A successful candidate should have a master's or doctorate degree in physics or in a closely related area such as physics or science education. We value experience and commitment to excellence in mentoring and teaching students using student-centered and evidence-backed strategies. Candidates should be committed to participating in WPI's distinctive project-based curriculum and DEI initiatives. In particular, the following qualities are required for the position:

  • Advanced degree in physics, STEM education, or a closely related area.
  • Experience teaching physics at the high school or undergraduate level.
  • Experience with utilizing and assessing a variety of teaching methods.
  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative and creative teaching approaches.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.



The following qualities are preferred, but not required:

  • Teaching/mentoring experience in a high school science education setting.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Experience working with diverse populations with inclusive, culturally responsive approaches.
  • Alignment and openness to collaboration with the team of educators and researchers in WPI Physics and the WPI STEM Education Center.

The WPI Physics Department has a vibrant teaching and peer learning assistant program and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Physics and Applied Physics. It is a PhysTEC Comprehensive site with a physics teacher preparation program, and has a Master of Science in Physics for Educators for in-service teachers. The STEM Education Center at WPI is a leader in teacher education across pre-K to graduate school levels, and in community development around teacher education. Students in the Physics Teacher Preparation Program can get a B.S. in physics and a Massachusetts Initial Teaching License in four years.
