Position Summary:

The Senior Geologist position is a full-time, non-faculty exempt appointment stationed at the University of Idaho's Moscow campus. A Senior Geologist reports to and coordinates work plans with Research Geologists and the Director and assists and facilitates the completion of geological field research projects at the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS). This position assumes Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator responsibilities for the development and execution of research initiatives including grant proposals and submissions for the acquisition of research funding. Position requires implementation of field-based geological research projects, collection, analysis and interpretation of geological data and the construction, publication and presentation of the research and conclusions to a diverse audience. The Senior Geologist assumes lead or co-author position on geologic maps, technical reports, and other geology-related publications at the IGS. Position provides direct leadership and oversight of multiple, concurrent geological mapping projects, including the development and administration of multiple budgets, and the supervision of other geologists and support staff involved in these projects. The research emphasis is geologic mapping of Idaho which requires extended travel, field work, interaction and development of relationships with industry, state and federal agencies, academic institutions, professional colleagues, and the general public. New employees are expected to complete licensure as Professional Geologists within 18 months of employment at IGS to be eligible for merit-based pay increases.

The IGS is the lead state agency for the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of geologic and mineral resource data for Idaho. It is a non-regulatory state agency that is administered as a Special Program of the University of Idaho. In addition to the office on University of Idaho's Moscow campus, the Survey has an office in Boise located at the Idaho Water Center. IGS is committed to the advancement of geosciences and emphasizes the practical application of geology to benefit the citizens of the state. The Survey accomplishes its mission through applied geologic research and strong collaborations with federal and state agencies, academia, private sector partnerships, community service, and educational outreach activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Masters degree in Geology and a minimum of an additional 3 years of post-graduate applied geologic work experience.

- Experience and skills in the development and construction of geologic maps and cross sections.

- Advanced knowledge and proficiency of ESRI GIS software.

- Experience with development of technical procedures, and in being responsible for maintaining a project budget.

- Experience in directing and independently conducting research and to establish collaborative and scientific relationships as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Greater than 3 years of relevant professional experience.

- Strong, demonstrated commitment to field-based geologic investigations.

- Past work experience with supervising geologists or other technical staff.

- Familiarity with processing and interpreting lidar datasets.

- Experience with submission of grant applications and completion of research grant deliverables.

- Demonstrated ability to communicate information (orally and in writing) in ways usable by a diverse target audience.

- Experience in one or more of the following: 1) geophysical applications as they apply to surface and subsurface geology; 2) mineral exploration or mining; 3) geochemical applications to geology; or 4) surficial processes.

- Familiarity with the geology of Idaho.

- Registration as a Licensed Professional Geologist.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

- Ability to conduct field work alone, involving extensive traveling for field assignments, hiking over rough terrain, and carry or otherwise move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

- Field work involving walking and hiking over rough terrain, carrying equipment, running sampling equipment, traveling for 1-2 weeks at a time, up to 10 weeks a year
