Departmental Overview

The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology (MCB) is home to undergraduate and graduate academic programs as well as Faculty Research performed by faculty organized in five divisions:
  • Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology
  • Cell and Developmental Biology
  • Genetics, Genomics and Development
  • Immunology and Pathogenesis
  • Neurobiology


The teaching and research activities of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms. This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, including biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenesis and neurobiology. The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, ranging from viruses and microbes through plants, roundworms, annelids, arthropods, and mollusks to fish, amphibia, and mammals. The faculty of the department is organized into five divisions: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cell and Developmental Biology; Genetics, Genomics and Development; Neurobiology; and Immunology and Pathogenesis.

Responsibilities

Husbandry & Behavior:
  • Under supervision of senior lab staff, will maintain healthy, stable breeding colonies of multiple transgenic lines, and conduct basic behavior testing.
  • Set up breeding pairs and monitor for pups, weaning and separating individuals as necessary.
  • Maintain up-to-date cage cards, breeding records, and genotyping database using SOMARK software and chipping system.
  • Sex individuals.


Sample Collection:
  • Collecting tissue samples for genotyping and monitor and record recovery.
  • With training, the individual may be responsible genoptyping individuals, recording results, and with the oversight of senior lab members, develop colony breeding plan.


Health Monitoring:
  • Monitor status of all animals at least three times per week.
  • Report any variance or concerns to lab members, who will decide the necessary course of action.
  • Monitor and detail recovery from procedures
  • May be required to humanely euthanize any unhealthy individuals.
  • Update health records, cage cards, and breeding database to reflect any changes.


Other Duties as Required:
  • May include coordinating with OLAC staff on housing, husbandry, and health needs
  • Proving input into or help design and build breeding database to meet growing lab needs.


Required Qualifications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communicating clearly and effectively with both research and OLAC staff.
  • At least 2 years of experience handling mice.
  • Expert experience with sexing mice at 21 days and detecting plugs.
  • Excellent record keeping skills.
  • Experienced in and comfortable with all aspects of mouse husbandry, including tissue collection and euthanasia.
  • Excellent time management skills, ensuring that animals in all three facilities are healthy and maintained in a humane manner that also meets all institutional and funding requirements.
  • Flexibility to cover some weekends and staff holidays.
  • High school diploma and/or equivalent training required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience working with animals under the rules and regulations of the University of CA, state of CA, and NIH guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of Somark inventory and tagging software.
  • Some college course work, particularly in biology, preferred but not required.
  • Animal husbandry certificated preferred, but not required.


Salary & Benefits

This position is a non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience.

This is a part-time (20-hours per week), career position eligible for full UC Benefits.
