The Department of Information Science in the Graduate School of Education, University at Buffalo, the State University of New York (SUNY) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to start in Fall 2024. The position is a joint appointment with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences with a tenure home in Information Science.

With a long history of research excellence, innovative teaching, collaboration and collegiality, and emphasis on equity, social responsibility and justice, our departments are looking for a colleague who will contribute expertise in the area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), which may include human-information interaction, human factors in technology, intelligent information interfaces, information visualization, sociotechnical systems, human-robot interaction, virtual reality and augmented reality, fair and responsible artificial intelligence, and other interrelated areas.

Responsibilities include:
  • Maintain an active and productive research agenda commensurate with a Research 1 tenure-track faculty appointment
  • Seek external grant funding
  • Teach a total of four courses each year, two within the Department of Information Science and two within the Department of Computer Science
  • Advise Information Science master’s and Ph.D. students
  • Participate in professional activities and serving on department, school, and university committees

The Department of Information Science offers the following programs: an ALA-accredited MS in Information and Library Science, MS in School Librarianship, an Advanced Studies Certificate, and a Ph.D. in Information Science. In addition, we have collaborative agreements with the School of Law to offer a JD / MS in Information and Library Science, with the Department of Music to offer an MA (Music) / MS in Information and Library Science, with the Department of English to offer two combined degree programs: BA in English / MS in Information and Library Science and BA in English / MS in School Librarianship, and with the Department of History to offer a BA in History / MS in School Librarianship.

The Department of Information Science is ranked 32nd in the world in the 2022 QS World Rankings for Library and Information Management and is ranked 23rd in the 2021 US News & World Report Rankings for Library and Information Studies programs. Since 2015, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering has moved up its rank to be among the top 40 on csrankings.org and is among the top 25 in two recent years (2017 and 2019). During the same period, our research expenditure has grown from $4.5 million (for AY 2015- 2016) to $6.3 million (AY 2019-2020).

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) offers BS degrees in computer science (accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET), and computer engineering (accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET), a combined 5-year BS-MS program, a minor in computer science, a Certificate in Data-Intensive Computing, and several joint programs (BS in Computer Science/MBA, BS in Computational Physics, BA in Social Sciences Interdisciplinary - Cognitive Science Concentration, BS in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology - CSE concentration) as well as MS and PhD programs in Computer Science and Engineering.
