Faculty, Tenure Track - General Botany/Horticulture

Utah Valley University invites applications for a tenure-track position in General Botany/ Horticulture within the Department of Biology to begin August 2020. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory and upper-level courses in botany and biology including General Botany (BOT 1010), Flora of Utah (BOT 2100), Field Botany (BOT 2050), and majors and non-majors biology (BIOL 1620, BIOL 1010); and develop additional courses in the area of expertise to meet department needs, including in the establishment of a new certificate of Horticulture currently being designed. Such courses might include Weed Management & Control, Native Plant Propagation for Landscaping and Restoration, or others. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a research program that includes undergraduate students in areas of field botany and horticulture, and work in conjunction with the UVU Greenhouse and Herbarium managers to improve the university collections, particularly for purposes of teaching. Additional responsibilities include working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to promote successful growth of the department and serving on department, college, and university committees as fitting a tenure-track position. Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Ph.D. in botany, horticulture or closely related field required.
* ABD applications will be accepted if doctorate verification is received by June 30, 2020.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Demonstrable knowledge of effective teaching and learning techniques. Working knowledge of the regional flora and horticultural practices, particularly native plant cultivation.
* Demonstrable skill in teaching large and small classes including field classes. Experimental approaches to address research questions appropriate for this position. Experience in planning and executing overnight field trips that are safe, engaging, academically rigorous, and protective of the environment. Good communication skills, both oral and written.
* Demonstrable abilities to develop curriculum and teach courses, communicate in written and verbal form, work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students.
* Demonstrable abilities to work in teams with other faculty and staff, network and collaborate with commercial, agency and/or non-profit organizations involved in botanical practices, propagation, agriculture, and/or conservation and use of earths water, land and biota, and involving students in hands on experience with those organizations, supervising, advising and mentoring students and staff in order to promote success.

Preferred Qualifications:

Post-doctoral research or teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates with excellent teaching skills, in the classroom as well as in the field. Preference will also be given to candidates familiar with the regional flora and research interests in horticulture and horticultural practices. Strong knowledge of active learning pedagogies and an established record of incorporation of those techniques in the classroom (especially in biology courses). Experience or strategies for teaching at open-enrollment institutions. Publication record that indicates successful mentorship of undergraduates. Experience in or and/or commitment to hybrid and online instruction.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to conduct botanical field research is essential: Must be able to handle a climate that includes extremes of mountain cold and desert heat, as well as irregular outdoor terrain.
