The School of Chemical Engineering is looking for


The successful candidate will conduct experimental materials science research aiming for high impact scientific publications concerning new multifunctional bio-sourced substrated for photovoltaics and optoelectronics. There are several positions available ranging from the development of novel biobased materials to their implementation and testing in solar cells. The exact role can be somewhat tailored based on your strengths as well as your long-term career goals.

The positions are in crossdisciplinary projects related to the work undertaken in the Departments of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2) and Chemistry and Materials Science (CMAT). The positions will be located either in the group of Prof. Jaana Vapaavuori, Academy Research Fellow Kati Miettunen or in co-supervision. Both groups are actively working in developing new sustainable material solutions for renewable energy, and consist – altogether, approximately 10 active members (M.Sc. and PhD students, as well as postdocs). The 1-2 of the positions are related to a new Nordic project SUBSTAINABLE, and the other position is related to two ongoing projects: BRAGI in FinnCERES bioeconomy flagship developing biocarbons for energy applications (here work related to solar cells) and Dr. Miettunen’s Academy Fellowship BioEST. All these projects are funded by Academy of Finland. All the hired post docs will be part of FinnCERES bioeconomy flaghip ecosystem and benefit from the network and opportunities that the flagship offers (e.g., funding for international networking and mobility).

As a successful applicant, you should be highly motivated in experimental science and have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in materials science, chemistry, physics or a closely related field. Earlier work experience and publishing activity in materials science, optics, electrochemistry, photovoltaics, cellulose chemistry or fiber processing will be highly appreciated. In the position related to project BioEST, skills related to combining computational methods in experimental research are counted as a benefit. In general, we expect that you have publications in international peer-reviewed journals of your domain. Since the work will be conducted in international environment, fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required. Moreover, demonstrated experience of having carried out independent project-based work and working in a highly collaborative environment is called for.

We offer a collaborative working environment with excellent mentoring taking into account your career stage and personal goals. The postdoctoral fellowship includes possibilities to participate in supervision of younger students, communication of research beyond scientific articles, applying external funding and developing new research-based teaching at B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels. The appointment starts on the 1st of April 2020 for a contract of 1 year with potential for renewal (possibilities to negotiate also earlier or later starting date).

Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the applicant following the salary system of Finnish universities (the current salaries for a starting post-doctoral fellow are approximately 3300 eur/month gross). The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland´s comprehensive social security.
