The Department of Biology at West Virginia University invites applications for a Service Assistant Professor starting August 2022 or January 2023. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position with full benefits. Service Assistant Professors at WVU are eligible for promotion; however, promotion to senior ranks is not required for institutional commitment and career stability in a service faculty appointment. Service Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms up to three years, with no limits on the number of terms.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and assessing efforts toward recruitment and retention; serving as the departmental lead for new student orientation and recruiting events for incoming Biology majors; contributing to academic advising in the Department of Biology. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in curriculum development and departmental governance. Although the primary area of contribution is service, the successful candidate will also coordinate and teach the required orientation course and additional courses for Biology majors as needed. A 10% allocation of time for conducting research is available but not required.

The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Biology or a closely related field or a terminal degree in higher education with additional background in Biology at the time of employment. In addition, we seek evidence of, or potential for, (1) developing, implementing, and assessing innovative recruitment and advising initiatives, including working with at-risk students; (2) excellence in teaching undergraduates and assessment-based advancement of curriculum and instruction; (3) the ability to develop new courses; (4) excellent written and oral communication skills; (5) excellent interpersonal skills. The teaching load is 2 courses or course equivalents per semester.  

The Department of Biology offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees and maintains approximately 650 majors annually. The department offers Areas of Emphasis in Genomics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Neuroscience, which are aligned with the department’s research foci.

WVU is a R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area.
