Postdoctoral Research Associate - Clean Room


The Institute of Materials Science (IMS) seeks applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate with a background in chemistry, engineering, or another closely related field of materials research. The incumbent will work in UConn’s state-of-the-art research facilities in the brand new Science 1 building, overseeing and facilitating clean room instrumentation use in a vigorous and versatile research environment. The primary position goals are to manage laboratory use and facilitate experimentation tasks under the supervision of IMS Director, Dr. Steven L. Suib.


  • Train users on all clean room instrumentation and techniques.

  • Responsible for the safe and effective operation of clean room bays.

  • Provide maintenance activities for clean room instrumentation, including coordination of equipment repairs/upgrades and ordering supplies.

  • Operate instrumentation for end-users based on sample and project specifications.

  • Participate in activities for the IMS Industrial Affiliates Program: running samples, analyzing data, and writing reports.

  • Prepare and present materials as part of workshops, short courses, and seminars on the use of surface analysis in materials science and industry applications.

  • Interface with faculty members on collaborative research efforts requiring clean room resources.

  • Monitor clean room use daily, acting as resource and facility expert for researchers.

  • Maintain and manage facility use schedule and records based on parameters set by the IMS Director.

  • Perform other related duties as needed.


  • Ph.D. or equivalent, with a background in engineering, chemistry, polymers, materials science, or another closely related academic field.

  • Strong working knowledge of laboratory equipment and techniques [e beam scanning electron microscope and pattern writer, reactive ion etcher, lithographic equipment, ALD, vacuum coaters, 1. AJA Orion-8 sputtering system, maskless aligner, deposition systems, plasma etchers, oxygen etchers, sputtering systems, wire bonder].

  • Experience with and working knowledge of clean room features and research benefits.

  • Excellent communication skills, including both oral and written contributions.

  • Demonstrated ability to summarize data and make presentations to research sponsors.

  • Familiarity with computer software and research applications.

  • Capable of lifting.

  • Ability to pass health and safety requirements associated with hazardous materials and instruments.


  • Demonstrated ability to train others in safe equipment use.

  • Physical and chemical analysis experience using both standard and modified test methods.

  • Effective communication skills across a diverse stakeholder audience.

  • Sound knowledge of scientific principles applied to highly specialized laboratory techniques of moderate difficulty.

  • Strong publication record.


The start date for this position is January 2023 and the initial appointment will be for one year, potentially renewable based on the results of a regular progress evaluation. Continuation beyond two years is contingent upon external funding applications and performance. The position is full-time (40 hours/week) with an annual salary commensurate with experience.
