The Tufts University Department of Chemistry is seeking a part-time lecturer for our Environmental Chemistry course during the Fall 2023 Semester. The successful candidate will teach Chem 8, an introductory course for non-science majors and environmental studies students. The course is designed to give students an appreciation for the basic chemical principles that underlie the causes and possible solutions to current environmental challenges. The course will explore chemical concepts that include equilibrium in complex systems, thermodynamic limits, and kinetic realities as well as the intersection of Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Justice. Case studies from current events and the literature provide applications and context for the course material.

The course instructor is responsible for two 75-minute lectures/class meetings per week, holding weekly office hours for students, and for student assessment, including preparation and assessment of assignments and exams. 

The class is scheduled to meet on Tu and Th from 4:30-5:45 PM. We are planning for classes and office hours to be held in-person for the Fall 2023 semester. The first day of classes will be September 5, 2023. 

Qualifications

A Ph.D. - level understanding of Environmental Chemistry is required, and a Ph.D. in the field of Chemistry is preferred.  Additional qualifications include prior teaching experience and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education.

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working closely with talented students and who possesses the ability to explain concepts in environmental chemistry to students with diverse educational backgrounds.
