Job Description
The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor in Experimental Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics to begin in Fall 2026. This is a 10-month tenure track appointment.
Responsibilities of the candidate will include:
- Establishing an externally funded research program in experimental atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics, broadly defined
- Teaching physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, consistent with the academic programs of the department
- Performing service activities commensurate with rank.
Teaching and service responsibilities of the position are commensurate with other Carnegie Research-1 institutions.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
A Ph.D. or equivalent in Experimental AMO Physics, or a closely related field.
Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Demonstrated ability in the execution and analysis of AMO experiments.
- Ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, as demonstrated either by formal classroom / lab teaching or professional presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postdoctoral research experience.
- A strong publication record.
- Experience preparing peer-reviewed external grant proposals or experiment proposals.
