The Science, Engineering & Technology Group of KU Leuven Campus Kulak at Kortrijk has a vacancy for a full-time academic position in informatics and computer science (under the auspices of the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Engineering Science). All tasks related to this position are primarily localized and carried out at KU Leuven Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, and require an active presence at this campus. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record, with a solid background in computer science, and with teaching competence in informatics and computer science. Science & Technology Group – Campus Kulak - Kortrijk The Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk organizes the Bachelor programs in Sciences (mathematics, physics, informatics, biology and chemistry), including options towards pharmaceutical, engineering and bio-engineering study programs. Hence, it is a very multidisciplinary environment, both from an educational and research point of view. As a member of the senior academic staff of the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, you will be appointed at the Department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Engineering Science within the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of KU Leuven.
Research is an inseparable component of the Kulak campus of KU Leuven that is characterized by interdisciplinarity, regional and international cooperation, and fully interacting with the Department of Computer Science in Leuven and at its campuses in Flanders.
  • We expect that you will develop research activities in the domain of computer science at KU Leuven Campus Kulak, relating to knowledge fields that interconnect software engineering on the one hand, and Data Science (DS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the other hand. The research can be situated on the fundamental theoretical stage as well as on the level of innovative development of new software tools  and algorithms, and their applications.
  • Software engineering as well as DS and AI are research themes for which the Department of Computer Science is internationally recognized. The design and operation of software systems is becoming more and more challenging. This challenge is fueled by a multitude of reasons, including the rapid progress of the technology of computing platforms and devices (in the cloud, on the edge, or in the pocket), the increasing connection of computing systems to a wide variety of sensors that capture large amounts of complex data (Internet of Things - IoT), and the necessity to operate in a trustworthy and sustainable way in highly dynamic environments (software resilience). These challenges span the full software lifecycle from analysis and development to operation and maintenance.  Their resolution is increasingly supported by (or has led to) advanced AI and DS techniques such as (self-)adaptation, evolution, and learning. Multiple researchers have started applying tools of AI/DS into software engineering and vice-versa. This synergy is recognized to hold great potential.
  • The expertise and know-how of the informatics team at Kulak is essential for the core education in informatics, e.g., with learning pathways from computer architecture and operating systems to databases and machine learning. Research of the informatics team at Kulak is also part of a campus-wide and interdisciplinary research direction in AI and DS covering fundamental development as well as engineering, health, language, cognitive and educational applications. The research is often done in close collaboration with local industry, regional academic partners including the University of Lille, the KU Leuven Campus Bruges and the Technology Campus Ghent, and within a network of international partners.
  • For the present vacancy, Kulak wants to attract an academic staff member, with a strong research profile in software engineering supported by or in support of artificial intelligence and data science. This staff member will further expand and consolidate the unique position of the informatics team at Kulak in algorithmic graph theory, optimization, AI and DS. As part of this mission, you participate in a wide-ranging variety of national and KU Leuven managed research projects and initiatives on this subject.
  • You are encouraged to set up interdisciplinary collaborations with other researchers in complimentary domain disciplines at Campus Kortrijk as well as at other campuses of KU Leuven. In view of developing your own research program, you are capable of acquiring research funding in a competitive setting, and you are proficient in setting up national as well as international research collaborations. Furthermore, you are supposed to serve as an advisor to PhD-candidates and to publish in international leading journals within your field of research.
  • Your teaching tasks will consist of several courses in informatics and computer science at Campus Kulak Kortrijk, in the study programs within the Science, Engineering & Technology Group or in service education provided by this group. This includes basic courses (for a diversity of academic programs) as well as more advanced courses in the Bachelor of Informatics and in the track towards the specialization Computer Science of the Engineering program. Your teaching duties can change depending on the evolution of the study programs at Kortrijk.
  • Teaching can take up to 50% of your tasks. As an element of the educational and pedagogical profile of KU Leuven Kulak, active interest and professionalization in educational quality and training is expected. The teaching duties linked to this position require an immediate and profound active knowledge of the Dutch language (a C1-language level for Dutch is required for teaching).
  • You are keen in finding regional, national or international opportunities for collaboration. You devote special attention to the functional outreach of your research achievements and take initiative to create and maintain connection with a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary applications in the region.
  • You represent the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, your department, your faculty and your group in external activities and you operate as primary contact between the university and its partners.
  • You actively participate in one or several outreach activities such as science-communication, lifelong learning or societal debates.
  • You have a PhD in Computer Science or another equivalent degree with research experience in Informatics and Computer Science. Your research expertise should be visible through publications in international leading research journals. Expertise in the interaction field of Software Engineering and DS/AI is an asset.
  • You are able to present a research plan that exhibits the added value for the national and international recognition of Computer Science at KU Leuven Campus Kulak, with specification of relevant collaborations with other partners inside and outside the university.
  • You have confirmable qualities in providing academic education.
  • We expect a language certificate Dutch CEEC level C1 at the start of your appointment. Teaching experience is an advantage.
  • You have a personal vision and a clear perspective on academic teaching and education organization.
  • You have organizational skills and a cooperative attitude. Leadership qualities in a university context are required.
  • You will be involved in service-tasks related to the outreach of your own research and teaching, and the research and teaching by the Science, Engineering &Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk.
