About the Opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate for projects focused on quantum control and quantum computation using trapped ions. This position is funded by the United States Army Research Office.

The Quantum Control Laboratory at the University of Sydney is focused on experimental studies of quantum control, quantum computation, metrology, and quantum simulation using trapped ions. The lab is a part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), a collaboration of five major Australian universities focused on fundamental and applied research in quantum physics and engineering. Furthermore, the University is part of the newly founded Sydney Quantum Academy (SQA). Candidates will also have the opportunity to collaborate with local and external partners supported by major international projects, including cutting-edge industrial partners such as quantum technology startup Q-CTRL. Details of recent publications and ongoing research projects are available here:

The project will follow a range of successful projects at the interface of cutting-edge trapped-ion experiment and quantum control. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to a variety of activities through collaboration with PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and senior research leaders. Topics to be explored include

  • Exploration of new programmable quantum simulation protocols using linear ion chains, focussed on the simulation of chemical dynamics
  • Development of new techniques in the measurement and characterization of quantum systems, leveraging insights from the fields of robotic control and machine learning.
  • Development, characterization, and commissioning of experimental equipment including both ion-trap quantum computers and advanced hardware for precision frequency metrology.

Primary responsibilities for the candidate will include conducting experimental measurements, developing new hardware for system enhancement, exploring new applications of trapped ions, mentoring postgraduate and undergraduate students, and providing day-to-day oversight of laboratory projects and students.
