Assistant Project Scientist - Stem Cell Instrumentation Foundry

The Office of Research and Economic Development is seeking an Assistant Project Scientist (working title- Technical Director) in the Stem Cell Instrumentation Foundry (SCIF). The selected candidate will be under the general supervision of the Core Facilities Executive Director and will work with considerable independence in conjunction with faculty, students, and researchers. The SCIF is a multi-unit, multi-user facility to provide Nanofabrication capabilities for research and instruction in the biological and physical sciences, and engineering. In conjunction with the Executive Director of the Research Core Facilities, incumbent will help manage the cleanroom budget and controls for day to day operations. The Technical Director will oversee infrastructure renovation and instrument installation; development and implementation of facility policies and a recharge structure; training and technical assistance for users. Additional responsibilities include oversight, maintenance, and repair of all cleanroom equipments; contributing to the preparation of instrumentation grant proposals; research publications; and help supporting short courses/summer modules and students who use these instruments, and outreach events featuring them. The candidate will also provide mentoring and guidance to postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students working in association with the Cleanroom users. The position will involve working with faculty and other researchers to prepare methodology sections in grant applications mainly for instrumentation grants, implement analysis plans, optimize techniques and analyses, and provide guidance to investigators on experiment design and analysis issues. Finally, the selected candidate will help supervise the development and execution of multi-disciplinary research projects or instructional and experiment design related to micro and nanotechnology research areas.

  • Supervises operation of research laboratory and performs necessary maintenance and repair of cleanroom instruments;
  • Consults, supervises and coordinates the activities of cleanroom users and support staff in experimental design, interpretation of results, and instructional goals;
  • Contributes to original research within the lab, which includes: co-authorship on scientific publications, seeking external funding, and presentations at professional meetings and/or serve as a reviewer for grant proposals and journal manuscripts;
  • Ensures regulatory compliance relative to safety in small to medium or single facility;
  • Performs or supervises cleanroom inventory and purchasing
  • Coordinates with business operations as a core facility at UC Merced (provides documentation for invoicing as well as determines annual and long term budget needs);
  • Attends and contributes to UC Merced's community of lab managers at core facilities, relevant graduate groups and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

To be considered for the position, a Ph.D. degree required. 2 years of prior experience in Cleanroom environment/operations, or related field, is preferred.
